Project 1
Precedent Study
In a group of 5, we investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and ideas. We are required to conduct analysis on specific building through drawing, model-making, written and verbal presentations. Our group choose the Colosseum as our historical building.
Task 1: Essay (group)
A 500-word essay, which include images, sketches or diagrams to fit maximum 5 A4-size papers of the chosen building on its design ideas and significant contribution to its culture.
After completing this task, we recognize and recall appropriate verbal architectural vocabulary when referring to building types, styles and periods. Besides, we also exemplify and classify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
Task 2: Analysis Presentation Board (individual)
A presentation board that analyses the our historical building. Drawings include floor plans, building sections, analysis diagrams and sketches, which are composed on one A2 board and strictly hand-drawn and hand-written.
Analysis include:
Concept analysis (building concept and/or architect concepts)
Building massing analysis (structure, geometry)
Circulation Analysis
Spatial Organization analysis (public vs. private, symmetry & balance, Unit to whole, Repetitive to unique, Additive and subtractive, Hierarchy)
Building section analysis
I tend to produce a building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships while doing this task.
Task 3: Model (group)
A model which made from balsa timber to communicate our analysis. We create a portion of the project that is of high significance with the important structure, components, ideas and concepts of your precedent. The model is 30 cm x 30 cm in dimension with 10 cm depth.
We show a quarter of the Colossuem as a zoom in version of the four different type of columns which are Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Composite.
