Design Studio 3

Project 1

Journey for the 5 senses

This project is for us to explore issues of spatial typologies and poetics through simple design. It consists of 2 parts, project 1A & 1B. In a group of 5, we have chosen to propose 2 schemes for a ‘walk’ themed ‘journey for the 5 senses’ of memorial for tragedy MH 17 and Korean MV Sewol Ferry disaster. By using two contrasting spatial types of our choice, the walk should translate a poetry spatial experience, and it should be informed by precedents studies.

By finishing this project, we managed to identify and explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience. We have learnt discipline specific knowledge which enables us to put theories into practice as well as understanding professional practice within the field of studies. Besides, communication, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills also have been trained as we were doing this in group.

Project 2

GENIUS LOCI: Site Analysis & Concept Development

This is a project where we are required to understand the site context in both intuitive and personal ways as it will suggest a series of parameters to suggest architectural solution which will be appropriate to the place and its meaning, and contributes to its context. Before that, we have to do a site analysis of our site - Pulau Besar. We are also required to map a site over a series of significant stages in the course of its history provides a description of the life and memory of a place. They can provide inspiration for a contemporary idea that connects directly with past archaeology/ memory/ history of the site. Then we were to come up with a concept design for a Visitor Interpretive Centre based on the site analysis conclusions individually.

By finishing this project, we have learnt discipline specific knowledge which enables us to put theories into practice. We are able to conclude/make sense of findings for the subsequent design work as well as having the ability to produce a meaningful concept which is communicated well via drawings & model by generating a clear concept which related to the genius loci of the place – Pulau Besar, abstract the concept and translate it into an architectural form of a building.

Project 3

GENIUS LOCI: VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE (VIC)

This final project requires us to further explore the idea of our project 2 into a more complex program. We are required to design an interpretive centre for Pulau Besar emphasising a strong engagement and relationship to the site, spatial experiences and programmatic requirements. It allows us to produce a design that will provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the culture/history/memory/essence of the site.

THE DESIGN PROPOSAL IS A DISTINCT AND UNIQUE STRUCTURE WITH A STRONG SENSE OF IDENTITY AND CHARACTER. IT HAS A HIGHLY EXPRESSIVE, SCULPTURAL QUALITY, INFUSED WITH A SENSE OF LIGHT AND SPACE. LIGHT AND VIEWS ARE THE DRIVING OF THE HOUSE.

THE DESIGN IS INSPIRED BY THE PULAU BESAR TOPOGRAPHY, WHICH CONSISTS OF CAVES, ROCKS, STONES AND BOULDERS.

THE COLOURS AND TEXTURES OF THE BUILDINGS IMITATE AND UNIFIED THE ARCHITECTURE WITH ITS SURROUNDING CONTEXT. LIGHT INTERPLAY WITH TEXTURE OF THE MATERIAL OR EVEN THE CONTRAST BETWEEN MODERN INDUSTRIAL COMPONENTS SUCH AS UNFINISHED CONCRETE AGAINST MARBLE COULD CREATE POWERFUL ARCHITECTURAL GESTURE WHICH ASSOCIATE WITH THE SENSE OF TIME AND SPATIAL QUALITY.

Upon this final project, I have learnt to understanding professional practice within the field of studies. For examples, I have successfully managed to generate design based on the unique character and conditions of the site context, and through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materials/ texture. . Besides, thinking and problem solving skills have also been obtained as I have to faced many problems while making my models and drawings. This project also help me to obtain lifelong learning skill as this is the first time I used the digital method to present my design.
