Design Communication

Project 1(A)

Onsite Sketching

This assessment introduced students to visualization and expression of space through on-site sketching activity. I have to engage with the site by experiencing it through a spatial sequence and recording my observation and perception of the spacesand the human habitation of these spaces through free-hand sketches, which include both exterior and interior spaces.

By sketching the site, I understand the notion of space in architecture, as well as developing the skills in visualizing of space through observation and perception of a given site. Besides, the skills in sketching as a mode of communication are also improved.

Project 1(B)

4 Tonal Values

This project is to develop skills in creating depthand tone in a sketch, and thus refining and enhancing the ability to produce an architectural sketch that is legible. Based on my selected image (motor), I produce four variations of a tonal value sketch. Examples of hatching types include stippling, cross-hatching, one-directional(hatching) and scribbling.

By doing this task, I develop the skills in communicating the above in various tonal and depth values together with various techniques of hatching through different medium.

Project 2(A)

Orthographic Projections

This project is to present a three-dimensional object in two dimensions along with drawing that communicates the shape and size of an object through a series of related two-dimensional views. The object that given to us is a building in USA named Eames House.

This architectural drawing include site plan, floor plan, front, back and both (left & right) side elevations of the given building, 3 x cross-section view of the building showing floor and roof construction. All these drawing have to be of a standard appropriate architectural scale(1 : 100)

By completing it, I tend to demonstrate drafting skills in modern and traditional methods of architectural drawing and identify architectural conventions and symbols. Moreover, I demonstrate in pencil and ink examples of line types, line weights, line quality, hand lettering.

Project 2(B)

Axonometric

This project is to communicate and express an architectural idea with a diagram at a fairly early stage of the design process. Axonometric drawings are a visually instigating and exciting way of expressing an idea clearly with minimal words if executed well.

I have to refer to my project 2A (orthographic drawings) and the documents for measurements and information to generate an external axonometricdrawing of the Eames House. After having confidently constructed my drawingin pencil, I proceed to trace the final ink drawing on tracing paper.

Upon this project, I am able to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of anaxonometric projection as well as understanding of what axonometric projections are, how to generate them and how to apply themto the design process and presentation.

Project 2(C)

Outline Perspective

This project to introduce perspective as a mode of communication in architecture by expressing spatial idea in 3-D form. I have to submit 1 x one point perspective and 1 x two point perspective composed in 1 x A1 paper ortracing paper. Both work in one A1 tracing paper. Rendering or coloring the perspective are also important for this project.

By completing this project, I learn to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of one-point and two-point perspectives by understanding of what perspectives are, and how to generate them and how toapply them to the design process and presentation. Besides, I am able to produce legible architectural drawings with strong creative intent.
