Building Technology 1

Project 1 Industrialised Building System

In a group of 7, we are required to perform a study on a building which was constructed fully or partially using IBS method and record in a video presentation format. Each group is required to obtain a plan of two units apartment adjoined together from books, internet or actual drawings yet the original building does not have to be built using IBS. Then, using appropriate references including the precedent study, conduct the following tasks:

  • Where necessary, modify and simplify the plan of the apartment to make it suitable to be constructed using IBS. The apartment should be modified to make it only three storeys high.

  • Decide on the most suitable IBS systems to construct the apartment i.e. precast wall, formwork system, hollow core slab, precast staircase, toilet pod, prefabricated timber roof truss, etc. The more components you have the higher marks you will possibly get.

  • Describe about the IBS systems used including all components, sizes, etc. then identify clearly and explain where they will be used.

  • Construct the IBS components of the model individually then joint all of them together in the actual way that an IBS building is constructed. All the process and sequence of construction in the production of the model should be included in the video.

  • Also provide in the video some descriptions about the building and construction system concerning energy efficiency and ecological impact as well as the embodied energy calculations.

By completing this project, I have learnt to relate basic structural elements and structural principles in construction as well as analysing and document construction methods and materials. Moreover, I am also be able to critique issues pertaining to energy efficiency, embodied energy as well as ecological impact.

Project 2 Integration with Design Studio 5

Task 1: Assignment 2 (a)

We are required to conduct some precedent studies of construction systems that we would like to apply in the design. We should include the following:
A) the roof system,
B) the wall/envelope system (at least 2 systems),
C) the flooring system, and
D) the structural system

Task 2: Assignment 2 (b)

Assignment 2(b) on the other hand is more integrated with the final design as all the submission requirements will be submitted together in the studio on a specific technical studies presentation board.

The content of this presentation board (A1 size) are as follows:

  • i)  Basic Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL) study; consists of floor plans or axonometric to show the building

setbacks, fire staircase, dead end, travel distance and escape route (fire requirement) in the building.

  • ii)  Structural design study; which include plans or axonometric to show the structural components (columns,

    beams, loadbearing wall, etc.)

  • iii)  ONE sectional perspective drawing (as shown in Figure 1); showing a cross section of the building from

foundation to the roof in perspective, to see the students’ understanding on how the different components of the building are put together.

By completing this project, I have learnt to analyse and document construction methods and materials as well as evaluating existing construction system and detailing of the selected project. Moreover, I am also be able to generate alternative construction solutions by means of sketches and drawings.
