Project 1

Fettuccine Truss Bridge 

 

In a group, we are required to design and construct a fettucini bridge of 750mm clear span and maximum weight of 200g. These requirements are to be met, or else it may result in reduction of grade. The bridge will be then tested to fail. Other than aesthetic value, the design of the bridge must be of high efficiency, i.e. using the least material to sustain the higher load.

 

The objectives of this project are as follows:

 

-To develop student’s understanding of tension and compressive strength of construction materials

-To develop student’s understanding of force distribution in a truss

-To design a perfect truss bridge which fulfils the following criterias:

  -High level of aesthetic value

  -Minimal construction material

 

By completing these project, we have developed our thinking and problem solving skills as we have to do a lot of research on the joining methods of truss components. Besides, communication, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills also have been trained as we were doing this in group.

Project 2

Application of Building Services

 

 

This project is related to my studio design project in semester 2 which relates to a domestic size building ( a retreat house ). We are expected to demonstrate our understanding of building services by proposing and designing the most appropriate systems for the building which include:

  • i)  electrical supply system (including split unit air-cond)

  • ii)  cold water and hot water supply system

  • iii)  sewerage and sanitary system

  • iv) drainagesystem

 

Therefore we are required to produce appropriate drawings and diagrams which include specifications, symbols, legends, images, texts, etc. to describe the planning and installation of all the building services. Additionally, students may also include specific clauses from the Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL) or other relevant Acts, Laws or guidelines which relate to the proposed systems into their presentation boards. 

 

 

By completing these project, I have developed thinking and problem solving skills as I have to understand the knowledge of building services systems in design and construction as well as applying appropriate building services system and solution for a specific design.
