Materiality of SPACE: Encountering Space & Materiality

This project is to introduce building materials that are commonly used in the local construction industry. The spaces or building selected to study will allow one to understand the reasoning behind choices made by certain designer in terms of concept, functional use, environmental response, environmental profile, structural requirement, availability of resources and etc when selecting or proposing a building material.

In a group of 5, we select a commercial / residential building, which allow us to experience and explore most of the building materials covered in the module. We chose the Boh Tea Visitor Centre as our building.

By completing these tasks, we tend identify various types of building material (Finishes and Structural) and undestand their effects on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building. Besides, we also get to know the application/ installation of material as finish and structural material (simple construction).

Integration: Material Specification

This project is to Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of Building Materials application and properties through materials specification or proposal for our final studio project.

This challenging task is to select suitable materials for a design project responding to several issues such as site context- material compatibility with climatic, cultural, and aesthetic conditions, applicability of material to occupancy, size of building, including durability and structural requirements, environmental impact building materials and recycling issues.

This encourage my exploration and identification of various types of building materials and technology by understanding of various types of building material which affects the tactile and chemical properties of design/building/space. I also understand the effects of building materials on occupancy, aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building, environment by produce drawings to visualize the architectural effects of proposed materials (spatial quality).
